Rhett the Boston Terrier
Known for his love of scarlet and his uncanny ability to find happiness wherever he goes, Rhett, the Boston Terrier brought happiness and laughter to the campus of Boston University. Though Rhett’s health declined over the years, he still brought many smiles to campus. Iwanicki raised him from puppyhood and said it was painful to watch his declining health.
The university is mourning the loss of the unofficial mascot Rhett, a Boston terrier. Rhett was an affectionate and lovable dog who served as the University’s mascot for twelve years. Rhett’s owner, Calvin Iwanicki, told the university community that the 12-year-old dog died in his arms, while his ex-wife held a sign in memory of the dog.
Boston University may change its mascot’s name to something else. While Rhett may be associated with slavery and the Confederacy, the mascot was chosen in 1922. The name Rhett was named after the male lead of Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone With the Wind,” Rhett Butler, who is smitten with Scarlett O’Hara. The school’s colors are black and scarlet, so it makes sense to retire Rhett from its official mascot’s name. A decision is expected by mid-October.
