The Waterside Terrier was named in 1879. It was a terrier that competed in the Broken-Haired Terrier class at the first dog show in the Aire Valley. In that show, Hugh Dalziel judged the dogs and described them as “par excellence” and “exceedingly good.” Interestingly, this was a year before Dalziel judged the Bingley Terrier. The Bingley Terrier’s fans objected to this description.
The Airedale Terrier was originally known as the Bingley Terrier and Waterside. This breed originated in the valley of the River Aire in West Riding, Yorkshire. It was later renamed the Airedale Terrier and recognized as a purebred breed by the UKC. In 1886, the Airedale Terrier was permitted to compete in dog shows in England. Its name reflects its history, as the original breed was known as the Bingley and Waterside Terrier.
Regardless of the color of its coat, the Waterside Terrier must be trained to behave appropriately. They are playful and boisterous and require plenty of exercises. They require daily exercise and discipline training. A fenced yard is recommended. These dogs should have their yard to exercise. Those with small children may want to stay away from them. They crossed an Otterhound with an old English rough-coated Black and Tan Terrier. The result was a dog with more strength and endurance for Water Rat hunting competitions in the Aire River. The Yorkshire Terrier has no definite origin history. Some speculate that the Yorkshire Terrier is a descendant of the Waterside Terrier. It was originally a small Scottish breed and came to England in the early 19th century. Its size was an advantage in catching rats and mice, as it could fit into small spaces. Although the Yorkshire Terrier is currently smaller than the Waterside Terrier, it has a history of being one of the first breeds brought to England from Scotland.
