The American Staffordshire terrier, also known as an “American Staffy,” is a small and active breed of dog. This mixed breed was created by combining the American Staffordshire terrier with the Catahoula Leopard Dog. While both of these breeds are known to be prone to aggression, the American Staffy is more resemblant to the Catahoula.

History

It isn’t known exactly how the Catahoula came about, but it was likely brought from the southwestern U.S. by French settlers, who had their own Beauceron dogs. These settlers crossed the Beauceron dogs with wolf-hunting dogs owned by the native Americans. Breeding continued in the 1800s, to produce a family dog.

Excellent Companion Dog

Whether or not an American Staffordshire Terrier or Catahoula mix is right for you depends on your personal preferences and lifestyle. The American Staffordshire Terrier is an excellent companion dog and enjoys playing with children, but the Catahoula Leopard Dog is not a good choice if you don’t have young children. With proper socialization and training, the Catahoula Leopard Dog will do just fine in a family.

Training this mixed breed can be a challenge.

The best way to ensure success is to socialize your puppy early on. Introduce him to as many people and other dogs as you can. You can also enroll your dog in a puppy obedience class to learn how to behave around other dogs and understand the rules. The dog will benefit from learning these things as it matures. If you’re worried about training your mixed-breed dog, don’t let this stop you.

The Size and Weight

The size and weight of an Australian Cattle dog and an American Staffordshire terrier Catahoula mix varies. Males tend to weigh more than females and weigh between forty and fifty pounds. They live for seven to fourteen years and weigh from forty to sixty pounds. They are highly intelligent and loyal, but they can be prone to developing problems. If trained early, the Catahoula-GSD cross can be an excellent guard and herding dog.

A Pitbull and Catahoula mix have similar personality traits.

Both dogs are active and need mental stimulation. Pitbulls, in particular, can become destructive if not socialized. Pitbulls and American Staffordshire terriers are both good choices for families with small children. You can find them at shelters and rescue centers throughout the United States. So, if you are not a breeder, you can still adopt a beautiful Catahoula or find a reputable rescue center in your local area.

A Catahoula mix sheds lightly year-round.

However, a Rottweiler will shed profusely twice a year. So, if you live in an apartment, this breed of dog is not recommended for you. It will need a lot of exercises and an interesting job. And don’t expect to be able to keep your pet in an apartment, as it will shed heavily.

A Catahoula is a powerful, muscular dog that can weigh between 55 and 95 pounds.

Depending on the parent breeds, the size of the Catahoula mix can be as small as fifty pounds or as large as 90 pounds. It’s a loyal, powerful, and protective dog, and the average lifespan is around ten or 14 years. Despite the short coat, the Catahoula is an excellent working dog and will need regular brushing to keep its coat in shape.
