The American Staffordshire terrier, also known as an “American Staffy,” is a small and active breed of dog. This mixed breed was created by combining the American Staffordshire terrier with the Catahoula Leopard Dog. While both of these breeds are known to be prone to aggression, the American Staffy is more resemblant to the Catahoula.
History
It isn’t known exactly how the Catahoula came about, but it was likely brought from the southwestern U.S. by French settlers, who had their own Beauceron dogs. These settlers crossed the Beauceron dogs with wolf-hunting dogs owned by the native Americans. Breeding continued in the 1800s, to produce a family dog.
Excellent Companion Dog
Whether or not an American Staffordshire Terrier or Catahoula mix is right for you depends on your personal preferences and lifestyle. The American Staffordshire Terrier is an excellent companion dog and enjoys playing with children, but the Catahoula Leopard Dog is not a good choice if you don’t have young children. Depending on the parent breeds, the size of the Catahoula mix can be as small as fifty pounds or as large as 90 pounds. It’s a loyal, powerful, and protective dog, and the average lifespan is around ten or 14 years. Despite the short coat, the Catahoula is an excellent working dog and will need regular brushing to keep its coat in shape.
